The Seven Most Popular Questions about Skin Care – ANSWERED

One question that we get asked quite often by customers is

What would you recommend for __?

The blank is filled in by all sorts of different things – acne, eczema, dry skin, oily skin, face soap, itchy dogs, fleas, etc.

For every person that asks a question, we can assume that there are many more that think the same question, but don’t ask it out loud….this post is for you!  Here are our recommendations for 7 of the most common questions we get asked and why they work.

  • What would you recommend for acne?

Glynne’s Soaps makes four soaps that can reduce acne.  The best one is Misty Mountain, made with Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils. Tea Tree oil is antibacterial and antifungal, so it will clear up those breakouts.  Because it’s all natural, it’s very gentle on your skin as well.  Another soap that works well to clear acne is Rain.  Both the Lemongrass and Bergamot essential oils will reduce breakouts.  Our California Cool soap is made with cucumber and lime essential oil.  Both of these natural ingredients have astringent properties and will clean your face without being harsh on the skin.  Lastly, our latest soap – Eczema & Psoriasis Soap – made with Neem oil can clean your skin and prevent acne.

  • What would you recommend for eczema?

Our new Eczema & Psoriasis soap, made with Neem oil is perfect for people with eczema and psoriasis.  The Neem oil has antibacterial, antifungal and anti inflammatory properties.  It’s strong enough to fight these skin conditions, but very safe for your skin.

  • What would you recommend for oily skin?

Oily skin needs a soap that will cleanse, without causing dryness.  Soaps made with the following essential oils will do just that; Tea Tree, Lavender, Lemongrass, Bergamot and Patchouli.  Try our Misty Mountain, Perfect Peace, Rain or Hipp”E” soaps, each with their unique scents but giving the same result.  They will combat your oily skin without doing damage.

  • What would you recommend for dry skin?

Dry skin needs the same basic treatment as oily skin, just in reverse.  It needs a soap that will moisturize without leaving skin feeling oily or greasy.

California Cool with cucumber and lime, Frankincense & Myrrh, or any of the Simply Olive Oil soaps are great moisturizing soaps.

  • What would you recommend as a face soap?

The astringent properties of both cucumber and lime makes California Cool the perfect face soap.  Although any of our soaps, because they are made with only natural ingredients will leave your face feeling clean and soft.

  • What would you recommend for itchy dogs?

Roxy’s Soap made with Neem oil is perfect for dogs with itchy skin.  It is the natural treatment for mange and it’s antibacterial and antifungal properties make it the perfect choice for dogs with itchy inflamed skin.  Coalman’s Soap, made with lavender essential oil and crushed oatmeal is also good to treat dry itchy skin

  • What would you recommend as a flea treatment?

If you have been following us long enough, you have seen the story of how we got started in the soap business.  Our dog Franklyn was killed by the harmful pesticides in chemical flea treatments.  You can read the whole story here.  Because of this, I used my Chemistry knowledge to create a soap that will combat fleas, and we named it after Franklyn.  Made with Eucalyptus and Tea Tree essential oils, Franklyn’s soap will kill fleas.  We also have developed a three step process that will keep your dog from getting future fleas.  You can read about this process here and purchase all the materials needs to get rid of fleas.

These are some of the most frequently asked questions we get.  Hopefully, this post has helped answer some of your questions.  You can order any of these soaps on our website, or find us at the Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market on Saturday and the Poplar Grove Farmer’s Market on Wednesday.

Stay tuned for the opportunity to get an Essential Oil Cheat Sheet – with all the information you need to pick the perfect essential oil for whatever ails you.

How To Tuesday: Fight a Cold the Natural Way

We all know that not wearing a hat in cold weather or going outside with wet hair do not cause colds, however there are things you can do that will decrease your immune systems ability to fight off cold germs.  And right now, after a busy weekend with little sleep, Gayle’s immune system needs some help.  So, while Gayle’s fighting her cold we thought we’d share some cold remedies with you.

  1. SLEEP – This doesn’t mean lay on the couch and watch TV or play with your phone / iPad or computer. Sleep, as in close your eyes and snore! Your body can heal itself, but you must allow it to do just that and sleep is just what the doctor ordered.
  2. DRINK – sorry to break the bad news, but drink water. Your body really needs to flush out the toxins, break down the mucus and those sugary sodas and juices aren’t gonna do a daggon thing to help. So have a few if you must but chug-a-lug some water!
  3. Combat cold symptoms with eucalyptus

Get Steamy – A hot and steamy bath will help to open and clear congestion.  You can place a few drops of eucalyptus oil into your bath or you can also use Glynne’s Bath Soak in either the Aussie Rainforest (Eucalyptus) or Rejuvenation (Eucalyptus and Peppermint) varieties.

  4. Neti Pot –  It’s most useful to use it before you are majorly clogged up. As a preventative measure, it can be used daily.  It cleans those pipes out! But the salt water can be drying in cold weather, so follow up with a bit of sesame oil or tea tree essential oil in each nostril. Gayle loves her neti pot and swears by it!
  5. Lavender and Tea Tree oils also have antibacterial properties, and Tea Tree oil will help heal dry nasal passages.  You can mix a few drops of each of these oils (add some eucalyptus as well) with a carrier oil such as olive oil or shea butter and use it as a chest rub.
  6. Enjoy some Ginger Tea – Combine a piece of ginger root with water in a pot. Boil, then simmer 10 minutes. Add a touch of raw local honey or lemon and drink.
  7. Eat Chicken Soup – Turns out Grandma was right chicken soup is good for helping to fight colds. So enjoy some delicious chicken soup (it’s best if someone who loves you makes it for you – DON’T discount the TLC factor <grin>)
  8. Avoid Dairy - Dairy creates excess mucus in the body. So don’t drink milk or eat cheese right now.
  9. Wash Your Hands – nothing prevents the spread of germs like hand washing. You should be doing it often anyway, but do it MORE when you’re fighting a cold or have a cold.
  10. Drink some more and sleep some more!

Start these therapies at the first sign of a cold.  You can decrease the severity of your cold and also alleviate the symptoms.

What’s The Benefit?

This past week, a customer was looking at all our soap offerings, looked up and asked me a question.  ”What are the benefits of all these essential oils?”

After answering his question, I continued to think about all the great benefits that were sitting on the table that I probably don’t highlight as often as I should.  Yes, the soaps are all natural, free from harmful chemicals and generally great for your skin, but the essential oils also have therapeutic properties.

So I thought today that I would list some of those for you.

  • Zen Aura (Lemongrass and Green Tea) – lemongrass essential oil has anti-depressive properties, it will boost confidence and give you feelings of joy – what would be better first thing in the morning?
  • Rejuvenation (Eucalyptus and Peppermint)the properties of these oils that make them a great soap are the pain relieving qualities, they are great at removing aches and pains, congestion and sinus problems
  • Simply Olive Oil Lavender (Lavender) – most everyone knows the benefits of lavender which include calming tension, reducing depression and inducing sleep
  • Frankincense & Myrrh – one of the little known benefits of both these oils are their cold and congestion relieving abilities.  This is a great soap for reducing the effects of those summer colds.
  • Citrus Zing (Orange and Ginger) - orange and ginger oils both are good at reducing inflammation which makes them great for easing the pain of arthritis and other aches and pains.

Aside from the fact that these products smell wonderful, they also have benefits you might not have thought about.  Buy some today and let them work for you.

Go Ahead – Sing Out Loud in a Public Restroom

As you might imagine, Glynne’s Soaps is committed to helping people find and use products that are healthy and good for their skin.  We also feel it’s important to provide people with information that will help them make the right choices when it comes to their skin care.  One aspect of caring for skin that everyone does many times a day is hand washing.    And while washing your hands is an important part of keeping you germ free and warding off any illness that might be running around, it’s also important to wash your hands properly.  This includes using the right soap, one that is not too harsh and that doesn’t contain chemicals that are bad for your skin or bad for the environment.

According to a poll by the American Cleaning Institute, 74% of Americans use antibacterial soap.  In our opinion,  antibacterial soap falls into the “bad to use” category.  Using antibacterial soap is not only bad for the environment, but it will also kill any “good bacteria” while it helps breed resistant strains of bad bacteria, all of which leaves you open to even more infections and illnesses.

Below is a video from Derm TV that demonstrates the proper way to wash your hands.  It includes tips such as what is the correct time to wash your hands.  I’ve always heard that you should sing “Happy Birthday” while washing your hands to make sure you wash long enough.  The video recommends 10-15 seconds.  So, my scientific self went to get a watch with a second hand to time myself singing “Happy Birthday”.  Sure enough, it took me 13 seconds to sing.  (Both times, since it was more scientific to do more than one trial.)

All of the soaps we sell are all natural and gentle on your skin.  Some of the essential oils they contain are also natural antibacterial or antifungal.  Essential oils such as Tea Tree and Lavender are well known for their germ fighting properties.  We also make a natural hand sanitizer that is safe for the environment and you.  If you are concerned about protecting your family from germs and harmful chemicals, make soap from Glynne’s Soaps part of your hand washing routine.

Rejuvenation Exfoliating Body Scrub (Product Spotlight)

Scrub away the Dead Skin

During these cold cold winters, exfoliation is a great way to keep your skin soft and healthy.  By using a scrub on your skin you can remove the dry dead outer layer of skin cells, revealing the softer layer underneath.  This is good for your skin in many ways.  By removing that dry skin, you will have softer skin that is more touchable and less itchy.  You also remove any germs or infections that might be hanging out on your skin, just waiting for an opening to cause you to get sick.  Glynne’s Soaps Rejuvenation scrub is just the thing you need to return a healthy glow to your skin.  This scrub, like all our products is made with only the finest all natural ingredients including therapeutic grade essential oils.  It contains olive oil which is a wonderful skin moisturizer and sugar with just enough of that “scrubby” feeling to remove the dry skin without damaging the new skin underneath.  This scrub’s fresh scent comes from the perfect combination of eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils.

Eucalyptus essential oil is best known for it’s ability to clear up respiratory problems, but it also is good for treating skin infections or other conditions.  It is used as a muscle relaxer and can cure inflammation.

Peppermint essential oil contains menthol which makes it perfect as a skin conditioner.  It will leave skin feeling cool and also gives nourishment to dull dry skin.  Because of it’s refreshing properties it can boost mental clarity and can relieve mental exhaustion.

Rejuvenation scrub contains eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils

Using these essential oils in tandem will give not only your skin a refreshing boost, but will also boost your mood.  When rubbed on achy sore muscles, the scrub can provide relief from the pain.  Rejuvenation scrub is wonderful as a foot scrub.  It will remove callouses and give tired feet a fresh outlook at the end of a long day.

If you are suffering from dry skin or tired achy muscles this winter, go to our website and get some Rejuvenation scrub.  Your body and mind will thank you.

Living Green

Yesterday we attended the Green Living Conference and Expo in downtown Wilmington NC. It was a fun event with many like-minded people. It is so nice to attend an event where the environment takes center stage! More and more everyone is realizing that everything we do affects the environment in one way or another.  Moreover, the things that have a harmful effect on the environment can have a harmful effect on our health. One area that can be improved is in the area of skin care. If the products you are using have a negative effect on the earth, they probably are not the best things you could be putting on your skin.

There are many reasons to go green with you skin care:

  • To keep your skin safe. The FDA does not require safety tests before personal care products enter the market. The chemical ingredients listed on the back of your favorite soap may not be healthy for you or the environment.
  • To keep the earth clean. Just because something is touted to clean your skin, does not automatically mean it is clean for the earth as well. If you see the ingredients mercury, lead acetate, toluene or petroleum, you might want to consider something that is safer for our rivers, lakes and oceans.
  • To support a sustainable economy.  Contributing to companies that have products and services that are healthy for you and the environment goes a long way toward bettering the planet and the global economy.

What are some things to look for when trying to keep your skin and the earth safe from dangerous chemicals? Research states that 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your blood stream. Be on the look out for these in the list of ingredients:

  • Parabens – including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben — might be associated with skin problems like irritations, dermatitis and allergic reactions
  • sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
  • sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
  • artificial fragrances
  • lanolin
  • phthalates – dibutylphthalate, diethylphthalate, and butyl ester- have been linked to birth defects
  • petrochemicals – petroleum-based substances like mineral oil and paraffins – petroleum products not only take hundreds of years to biodegrade, but they might be linked to skin irritation, allergies and cancer. •
  • DMDM hydantoin – breaks down to release formaldehyde, which is classified as a probable human carcinogen.

Many natural ingredients can be used to protect, rejuvenate and soothe your skin. They are to numerous to list here, but here are a few examples of ingredients to look for when buying green skin care products.

Plant Extracts:

  • Cucumber soothes and reduces inflammation. (Like our California Cool)
  • Green and white teas have antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radicals. (Like our ZenAura)

Essential Oils:

  • Tea tree oil is an antiseptic and provides light hydration; it is great for acne-prone skin. (Like our Misty Mountain)
  • Lavender oil evens skin tone and balances moisture levels. (Like our Perfect Peace)

Other Natural Aids: •

So, as you are looking for ways to “go green”, do not forget your daily cleaning regimen. You can find all the soaps mentioned on our website. Your skin and your earth will thank you.

Why we make All Natural Dog Soap

It won’t surprise you to find we spend a lot of time talking to people about soap We are passionate about all our products (if we don’t believe in it, we won’t make it). We are especially passionate about our dog soaps and our new product, Fido Fresh.

The dog products are personal for us.  Why make dog soap is still a very easy question to answer and yet the most difficult to put into words. It is still in a lot of ways an open wound for both us.  We have told the story so much, you might think the hurt would be gone, but it is not. We may never recover from the belief that our actions killed our dog.

It began several years ago, and yet it was quite sometime before we really grasped the relevance. Here is our story: It begins with fleas. Yep, the common everyday flea. If you have a dog then you probably have faced the dreaded flea. We live in a warm climate (near Wilmington, NC) and fleas are our nemesis. We have always had dogs and therefore always been on the front line in the war on fleas. It seems like a simple matter. Go to the vet pick up the latest and greatest in flea treatment. Come home, put on rubber gloves and administer between your beloved’s shoulder blades. Only our dog Franklyn got sick each and every time we did this “treatment”.  Within a week, we would be at the vet and he would be diagnosed with pancreatitis. Home we would come a few hundred dollars lighter with antibiotics and a “special diet”. Later, after doing our own research we came to the conclusion that the flea treatments we were giving him to “help him” were poisoning him. In fact, we believe that it eventually killed him.

Topical Flea Treatments

The ingredients found in the topical flea treatments are long and difficult to pronounce. They include things like fipronil, ethonal, polyvinlpyrrolidone, butylhydroxytoluene and carbitol. The last four ingredients are listed on the packaging as “inert”. Makes them sound harmless, doesn’t it? However, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the inert ingredients on topical flea treatments seem to be MORE TOXIC than the active ingredients. The EPA highly regulates the active ingredients in a product, but there is barely any regulation of the inert ingredients.

This is allowed to happen because the inert ingredients are thought of as the “secret recipe” and are allowed to be kept hidden from other companies that might steal that recipe. What are some of the health effects seen from these pesticides that we so eagerly put on our pets? Well, fipronil can cause organ damage, thyroid cancer and damage to the nervous system. Ethanol can cause birth defects. Butylhydroxytoluene causes cancer, and carbitol can cause nerve and organ damage.

So, what is the alternative? Living with fleas is dangerous in its own right and, let’s face it, annoying for everyone. The safest way to keep pesticides off your pet and keep them flea free is to use a comprehensive approach including herbal supplements, cleaning with all natural soaps and essential oils that repel bugs, and other environmentally friendly pest control alternatives. So, we make all natural dog soap to keep our fur kids safe from harmful chemicals and also to hopefully keep others from having to go through the same agony that we endured.

Diatomaceous Earth is a Powder

We have adopted a three step process to keep our yard, house and kids (ie pups) free from fleas.   It is all natural, safe for everyone (except the fleas) and is relatively easy.  Our yard is treated with food grade diatomaceous earth.  Diatomaceous earth contains the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are a type of hard shelled algae.  When fleas come in contact with this fine powder, it dehydrates them and they die, but the food grade version is very safe for dogs, cats, children, etc.  It can be sprinkled all over the yard.

In the house, we use borax.  Borax will break down the cell walls of the fleas, killing them instantly.  It can be sprinkled on carpets, bedding and furniture.  Leave the borax for a few hours and then vacuum thoroughly.  Make sure you throw out the vacuum cleaner bag so any fleas that might have survived can’t get back out into the house.  This should be repeated every two weeks for 6-8 weeks as the gestational period for fleas is two weeks and the repeat treatment will take care of any fleas eggs that might have been left behind.

For the third step of the process, we wash our dog using Franklyn’s All Natural Dog Soap.  Because it contains eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, it is the most effective at killing fleas and keeping them from returning*.  Between baths, you can spray Fido Fresh on your dog and anywhere they like to sleep.  Fido Fresh contains essential oils that will keep your dog smelling great between baths and also keep the fleas away*.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

If you live anywhere on the east coast, or have access to The Weather Channel, you know that there has been a “major rain event”.  Here in Wilmington we received somewhere around 24″ of rain in three days.  The rainfall broke the record that was set by Hurricane Floyd back in 1999.  There seems to be standing water everywhere, and you know that standing water is an invitation for mosquitoes to breed like crazy.

One of the best ways to keep these pesky bugs from biting is to use Glynne’s Soaps Bug Off Lotion or Bug Off Soap.  Both products contain a blend of 6 essential oils that all have bug repelling properties*.  Many of our customers have had great success with these products and are quick to recommend them to everyone.  In fact, you can read about it and view some testimonials here.  We are extremely pleased with the success of this product.  Make sure you head over to our website and get some before the bugs carry you away.

The Arrow Indicates Where Our Booth Would Be

Another negative effect of all the rain is that the Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market has been cancelled for tomorrow, October, 2nd, 2010.  It seems that the beautiful area near the lake that is home to the farmer’s market is underwater (see above photo) .  However you will be able to find Glynne’s Soaps at The Scandinavian Heritage Festival in Myrtle Beach, SC.  So, if you are near Myrtle Beach on Saturday, or just want to head that way for something fun, stop by our booth and say HI.  We would love to see you.

Product Spotlight

Alongside giving you important information regarding the benefits of using all natural products for yourself, your family and your pets, we like to, on occasion, highlight some of the products that we offer and give some additional, in depth information about them.

California Cool Soap – We frequently get asked if we have a soap that is a good facial cleanser.  We always point people toward our California Cool soap because it is made with fresh cucumber juice and lime essential oil.  The fresh cucumber is very beneficial for your skin.  They are an excellent source of silica.  Silica is a trace mineral that is helpful in building and strengthening the connective tissue that holds our bodies together.  Because of this, it can help in the reduction of wrinkles and promote smooth skin.  Cucumber is also a good source of caffeic and ascorbic acids which prevent water retention and decrease puffiness.

Lime essential oil acts as an astringent which increases and skin tone.  It also will detoxify and clear the skin of any toxic materials and oils.

California Cool is a soothing gentle soap that makes a great face soap.

Wrigley’s Dog Soap – Wrigley’s soap contains Cedarwood essential oil.  Cedar is a fresh smelling essential oil that is great for stinky dogs.  Bathing your dog with Wrigley’s soap will kill the bad smell and leave everyone happy.  Cedar essential oil also will relax and calm your dog and it does have flea repelling properties.

Wrigley’s Dog Soap is the best choice to get rid of that stinky dog smell.

Both these soaps, along with all our other products, can be found on our website.

Summer Protection

Everyone hates mosquitoes! I’m not even convinced mosquito moms love mosquitoes! Our human loathing of the pests have caused us to use some pretty nasty stuff to keep them away. For years, bug repellents containing DEET were used liberally to keep the bugs from biting. Most commercial bug sprays that you can buy at the store today have DEET as their main active ingredient. The only problem with that is that DEET, in the long run, is probably more dangerous than the actual mosquito bite. It can react with skin causing anything from a slight rash to seizure. There have been a few reports of people dying after using products containing DEET. As more and more research is being performed, it is showing that DEET also can cause brain damage after repeated exposure. And to make matters worse, the toxic effects of DEET were increased when it was combined with other chemicals such as those found in sunscreens.

Some people say that DEET is completely harmless, and an effective way to keep the bugs away, but it is a pesticide made from synthetic chemicals. There is nothing natural about it, and as more and more research is being performed regarding the long term effects of this pesticide, it is better to be safe than sorry.

There are, however, all natural alternatives to covering your body with pesticides. Glynne’s Soaps Bug Off Soap and Bug Off Lotion contain 6 natural essential oils that have bug repelling properties*. They have been shown to be effective against mosquitoes, ticks, flies and other biting annoying insects.

Some people have found that applying the lotion after bites (even from fire ants) will reduce the itching and burning.

This summer, use an all natural alternative to chemical pesticides on yourself and your children. It’s the smart choice.

*The FDA has not evaluated statements regarding the uses of essential oils or other ingredients. Glynne’s Soaps makes no claims regarding the use of these essential oils.
