We Survived Our First Four Years

Yesterday the Glynne’s Soaps crew celebrated our fourth anniversary. We shared our feelings in our latest newsletter, but I wanted to share them again here.

I just want to reiterate, we couldn’t have reached this milestone without the love and support of so many people!

We now understand why most businesses fail within five years….getting to year four is really hard! There is no doubt the word quit has been used more this past year than it has in probably either of our lives. But we made it!

Being able to say we’ve successfully survived four years makes the long hours and putting every extra penny back into the business to help it grow worth it.

We’re already looking forward to celebrating year five!

Jenn has lots of ideas for new products. We are evaluating how to capture more of a market share online. In other words, we’re still working :)

Where We’ve Been

As often happens with birthdays or anniversaries, we are spending some time today looking back at where we’ve been.  At our first festival we had 3 different varieties of soaps, all of them for dogs.  Now we carry almost 30 different types of soaps, along with lotions, sprays, bath soaks, candles and other skin care items.  Our products can be found if over 20 stores in 4 states.  We ship products all over the United Statesand even overseas.

Through it all, we have remained true to our mission and passion – we want to provide people with the best natural skin care using no artificial ingredients or fragrances.  There is so much out there that is bad for you, your family and your pets.  We provide safe alternatives to many of the dangerous chemicals that can be found in commercial products.

We are very proud of the fact that we have not compromised on our ingredients even though it would be less expensive and often easier.  However, we will always remain committed to providing you with the safest products available for you and your family.

It feels great to be four!

And we’d like to share that feeling with you.

So we’re giving you the chance to get four bars for $14.44! (Regularly $24.00) Just go to our website, pick your four bars (you can get more but only 4 at the super low price) and enter coupon code 1444 at check out. This offer ends October 28th so do not delay. The offer is good for any bar soaps (dog or human).

Happy Left Handers Day!

Today is National Left Handers Day, or as Gayle (and her mom) would call it wrong handed day!

In honor of this great day, i thought I would give you a few facts about left handed people.

  1. The best soapmaker in the world is left handed (HINT – She works for Glynne’s Soaps)
  2. We make up about 10% of the population
  3. We live on average 9 years less than right handed people
  4. The word left in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, which means weak or broken
  5. Tests conducted by St. Lawrence University in New York found that there were more left-handed people with IQs over 140 than right-handed people. Famous left-handed intellectuals include Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Benjamin Franklin
  6. Research suggests that left-handers are slightly more prone to allergies and asthma than right-handers are.
  7. Studies have shown that if a left-hander injures his dominant hand, he has an easier time learning to use the other hand than his right-handed counterparts.
  8. Other famous lefties include Jay Leno, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Brad Pitt, Bart Simpson and Osama bin Laden.

In honor of this momentous day, we are offering a coupon code worth 15% off any website order placed this week.  Just use the code LEFTIE at checkout.  Oh, make sure you use your left hand when you type it in!

Happy Birthday Albert Einstein

Today is Albert Einstein’s birthday.  It’s a special day around Glynne’s Soaps, because I am a huge fan of Einstein.  I even have this picture above my desk where I can look at it every day.

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving. ~ Albert Einstein

Today is also Pi Day (3.14), not to be confused with Pie Day, which was celebrated in January.  Not to get too boring, but pi is the ratio of the radius of a circle to it’s circumference and is said to have been discovered by the Egyptians in 1900BC.  The ratio was used mainly while building the pyramids.  You can use that bit of trivia at the dinner table tonight.

In honor of Pi and Einstein, we are offering a 13.3% discount (Einstein would be 133 years old today) off anything purchased on our website before Saturday.  Just use coupon code EINSTEIN to get your discount.

I shall leave you with more wisdom from the great man himself -

Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.

Imagination is more important than knowledge…

Finishing my first triathlon

You know that feeling?  The one you get when you are waiting for an answer, something that, if you get it, will help you fulfill one of your lifelong dreams?  It’s excitement and nerves all rolled into one.

Well, that is the way I’ve been feeling for the past few weeks.  And now that the deadline to receive my answer is fast approaching…it’s really all I can think about.

You see, on February 1st, Gayle read a blog post about the Brambleberry Athletic Club and immediately called me in to read it. Brambleberry, a soap-making supply company donates 5% of their profits every year to various nonprofits and has decided that part of that money in 2012 will be used to sponsor between 6-10 athletes and the charities that benefit from the events they participate in.

I immediately set about filling out my entry form.  The big event that I am participating in this year is the Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon that is held here in Wilmington on October 20th, 2012.  The proceeds of this event benefit the Wilmington YMCA and their “We Build People” campaign.  This campaign offers programs and services such as kids summer camps and adult education program for people who otherwise couldn’t afford it.  I think the YMCA does some great work for the community and I am happy to be able to play a part in raising funds for this organization.

I am planning on participating in the triathlon either way, but it would be great to have the entry fee paid plus extra money to donate to the cause.  I will also be proud to sport the Brambleberry Athletic Club shirt during and after the race.  I should know something by Feb 29th, so be on the lookout.  I’m sure you will hear my “whoops” of excitement if I get chosen!

If you want to keep up with my progress as I train for the triathlon you can follow along here.

And remember, use the coupon code THEGREATEST to receive 15% off all website orders placed before February 29th.

Winter Skin Care & a Birthday Coupon

Like it or not, it seems that winter weather is here.  And with it comes dry, chapped skin.  Sometimes it seems like no matter what we do, we still end up with dry hands and chapped lips.  Well, fortunately, there are some things you can do to combat the dry cold weather and keep your skin soft and smooth all winter long.

  • Use oil based moisturizers. Many products on the market these days have water as their first ingredient.  The higher the oil to water ratio is, the more moisturizing a lotion is.  The oil creates a protective barrier on the skin.   Glynne’s Soaps lotions are made entirely from skin softening oils such as shea butter and coconut oil.  They contain no water and so they are more moisturizing than other creams and lotions.
  • Drink lots of water.  Your skin can become dry due to dehydration, so don’t forget to drink lots of water and limit the amount of alcohol to stay hydrated.
  • Skip the blow dryer. If at all possible, let your hair dry naturally.  Using a blow dryer just adds to the dryness of your skin by exposing it to the hot dry air.
  • Don’t forget your lips. Cold, dry weather and high winds can leave your lips dry and cracked.  Using a natural lip balm will get them back to kissable form in no time.  It’s important to remember to stay away from products that contain petroleum because it will make the chapping worse.  A good rule of thumb to follow for not only your lip balm, but all your moisturizers is to only use things on your skin that contain ingredients safe enough to eat.  Food grade oils and butters instead of petroleum and chemical based products are safer for your skin and will keep you feeling soft all winter.  If possible, choose a lip balm with sunscreen.  Even in the winter, the sun can be damaging.

The skin is your largest organ.  It is important to keep it healthy and looking good.  Following a few simple steps and making sure you use only the best all natural products is the best way to avoid dry winter skin.

Don’t forget that your dog’s skin can suffer ill effects from the winter weather also.  Using an all natural soap for bathing will help.  Try Glynne’s Soaps Roxy Dog and Cat soap.  It’s made with neem oil, which is wonderful at relieving itchy skin.  For the pads of their feet and their nose, you can get NoZes &ToZes, a natural balm containing lavender and tea tree essential oils for healing.

Birthday Coupon Alert!!!

The staff of Glynne’s Soaps would like to take this opportunity to wish Gayle a very Happy Birthday.  Her birthday is today, and we are  taking the day off to celebrate.  Thank you Gayle for all the hard work you do to make Glynne’s Soaps the great company that it is.  We couldn’t do it without you! – Jenn, Wrigley & Marshall

To celebrate the event, we are offering a coupon for 25% off any website order placed today.  Just use the coupon code “Gayle’s 49″ to get your discount!

It’s Never Too Late to Say Thank You

We hope you were able to spend some time this past weekend thanking our veterans, past and present, who have fought to keep America free.  We are truly thankful for their service and sacrifice, and are blessed to live in this country.

Celebrating 11:11 on 11/11/11

This Veteran’s Day had a fun twist because the date was 11/11/11, something that doesn’t come around too often.  Our soap maker, Jenn was pleased because she is that “science and math nerd” sort of person.  We sat down with Wrigley the sales manager and tried to take some pictures at 11:11 on 11/11/11 to commemorate the  historic event.

Is it too late to offer a Veteran’s Day special?  We say “NO!  It’s never to late for a special.”  So, in honor of that, we are offering 11% off everything purchased on our website between now and Friday.  Just use the code “VETERAN” at checkout.

(On another note, if anyone knows where we can buy a Veteran’s Day t-shirt that says “11/11/11” on it for Gayle‘s mom, could you let us know.  She was hoping to find one.)
