We Survived Our First Four Years

Yesterday the Glynne’s Soaps crew celebrated our fourth anniversary. We shared our feelings in our latest newsletter, but I wanted to share them again here.

I just want to reiterate, we couldn’t have reached this milestone without the love and support of so many people!

We now understand why most businesses fail within five years….getting to year four is really hard! There is no doubt the word quit has been used more this past year than it has in probably either of our lives. But we made it!

Being able to say we’ve successfully survived four years makes the long hours and putting every extra penny back into the business to help it grow worth it.

We’re already looking forward to celebrating year five!

Jenn has lots of ideas for new products. We are evaluating how to capture more of a market share online. In other words, we’re still working :)

Where We’ve Been

As often happens with birthdays or anniversaries, we are spending some time today looking back at where we’ve been.  At our first festival we had 3 different varieties of soaps, all of them for dogs.  Now we carry almost 30 different types of soaps, along with lotions, sprays, bath soaks, candles and other skin care items.  Our products can be found if over 20 stores in 4 states.  We ship products all over the United Statesand even overseas.

Through it all, we have remained true to our mission and passion – we want to provide people with the best natural skin care using no artificial ingredients or fragrances.  There is so much out there that is bad for you, your family and your pets.  We provide safe alternatives to many of the dangerous chemicals that can be found in commercial products.

We are very proud of the fact that we have not compromised on our ingredients even though it would be less expensive and often easier.  However, we will always remain committed to providing you with the safest products available for you and your family.

It feels great to be four!

And we’d like to share that feeling with you.

So we’re giving you the chance to get four bars for $14.44! (Regularly $24.00) Just go to our website, pick your four bars (you can get more but only 4 at the super low price) and enter coupon code 1444 at check out. This offer ends October 28th so do not delay. The offer is good for any bar soaps (dog or human).

Fall Skin Care

As summer transitions into fall there are changes all around.  And whether you enjoy the changes or not, they will happen.  It’s probably best to just go with the flow and accept that summer is leaving and winter is on it’s way.

You don’t have to feel like a dry scaly alligator as the weather changes.  Just a few simple steps and you can keep your skin looking and feeling silky soft.

You might not realize it, but your skin care should change with the seasons as well.  Your skin has different needs as the weather gets cooler.  Here are some things you should make sure to do to keep your skin looking great through the fall season.

1. Drink plenty of water.  It is essential to keep your skin hydrated throughout the year.  This is easier to remember in the summer, but is just as important as the weather cools.

2. Don’t forget your feet.  Just because they are covered, doesn’t mean they are gone.  They still need TLC. Glynne’s Soaps Flip Flop Balm is the perfect addition to any fall skin care regime.  This lotion will keep your feet soft all winter.
3. Choose a soap that will keep your skin hydrated and moisturized.  An all natural soap is better for your skin and won’t dry you out like the detergent bars you can buy at the grocery store.
4. Sunscreen is still important.  Even though the temperatures are cooler and the sun is lower in the sky, your skin can still be damaged by it’s rays.  You should be wearing a sunscreen everyday.
5. Keep your lips soft and smooth with an all natural lip balm.  Glynne’s Soaps lip balms are great at keeping your lips hydrated and protected from the cold wind.  Choose one with zinc oxide for added safety.

An All Natural Riddle

What do you get when you cross a bar of all natural soap, hair from a llama, some elbow grease and a little ingenuity?

Give up?

A llama loofah!

Glynne’s Soaps is proud to unveil one of it’s latest creations – the Llama Loofah.  A Llama Loofah is a bar of all natural soap that has been felted with llama fibers.  The fibers shrink and form a tight weave around the soap.  This creates a loofah with soap inside.  When you use it, you have the exfoliating scrubbiness of a loofah combined with the benefits of all natural soap from Glynne’s Soaps.

Just use the Llama Loofah like a regular bar of soap.  The lather will work it’s way through the felted llama fibers as you scrub, cleaning your skin while exfoliating away the dead skin cells.  As the soap is used, the llama fibers will continue to shrink until the soap is gone.  You can then use the llama fibers as a loofah all on it’s own, or throw it away.

Glynne’s Soaps All Natural Llama Loofah comes in two scents - Hipp”E” (made with patchouli and clove oil) and Citrus Zing (made with orange and ginger oils).  The Llama Loofah makes a great gift.  Get one for everyone on your Christmas list.

Back and Better Than Ever

This weekend, Glynne’s Soaps will be re-releasing our Citrus Zing All Natural Soap.  We just were not happy with the formula and knew it could be better.  So, after discussions with our apothecary, Eva at Down to Earth Essential Oils in downtown Wilmington, we developed a new formula.

Citrus Zing is made with Orange and Ginger essential oils.  Orange oil is high is anti-oxidants and Vitamin C.  Skin care products containing orange oil are very effective at reducing wrinkles and slowing down the aging process.  The scent is bright and clean and will boost emotions and reduce depression.  Ginger essential oil, when added to skin care products, combats lethargy and muscle fatigue.

The combination of these oils makes this soap a perfect addition to your morning shower.  It will wake you up and get you ready for whatever your day brings.

Citrus Zing All Natural Soap is currently available on our website and will be available at the Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market on Saturday.

All Natural Tranquility Soap (Product Spotlight)

Are you one of those people that takes a bath before bed to relax?  When I was growing up, it was my grandmother’s “cure all”.  ”Just take a bath and go to bed”, she would often say.  If this describes you….we have just the thing you need to wash the worries of the day right down the drain.

Glynne’s Soaps All Natural Tranquility Soap is made with lavender and chamomile essential oils.  Both of these oils are well known for their relaxing qualities.  A study performed in England in 2009 demonstrated the anti-anxiety effects of lavender essential oil.  Studies have also been done to show the effects of chamomile essential oil as a sleep aid.

The relaxation benefits of these two oils are well known and documented.  In our Tranquility soap, they are carefully blended and used to create the perfect soap for winding down at the end of a long hard day.

We’re in the News

Last week we were contacted by Judy Royal a reporter for the Wilmington Star News. She said she was writing an article about local people who had taken an idea and created a wholesale business. She asked if she could interview us and possibly have a photographer come and take photos of us making products. Naturally, we agreed to be a part of the process because publicity is good :)

When the photographer, Mike Spencer,  came for our photo shoot; we had product ready to show off what we do. Of course, we also have dogs and they were being their usual helpful selves to Mike. We took the photos and thought we were through but Mike asked if he could shoot some product shots in our living room because the natural light was good.

As we watched Mike work and tried to keep the helpful pups at bay, the idea for a photo came to Mike and he asked if we would sit on our couch with the pups with our products in the foreground. Being people who can follow direction, we complied and soon Mike had what he thought was a winner. After seeing it in today’s paper, we completely agree.

The article was also very nice:

So you’ve got an idea for a product you want to make and sell.

Now what?

Many concepts remain just that because aspiring entrepreneurs don’t know how to get the ball rolling. But local people who have done it say it’s far from impossible if you do your homework, ask for help and follow your heart.

“If you are looking to start a business, choose something that you’re passionate about,” said Gayle Tabor, co-owner of Glynne’s Soaps. “Choose something that means something to you. You’re spending a lot of time at this to grow your business, so if it’s something you’re not passionate about you’re not going to want to do it. It is all-encompassing of your life.”

That was easy for Tabor and partner Jennifer Beddoe, who started an all-natural line of pet products in 2008 after the death of their dog was linked to use of a topical flea treatment. Customer demand prompted them to later add items for people.

But for Steve and Eleanor Johnston, owners of Aunt Ellie’s Gourmet Foods Inc., the passion wasn’t just about the product. They were looking for a lifestyle change when they began bottling and selling Eleanor’s salad dressing last month, even though she’d been making it for decades.

“We decided the time was right to become more self-sufficient,” said Steve Johnston, a real estate broker. “The economic uncertainty had a lot to do with it. The more self-sufficient you can become, I think the better off you will be.”

Both he and Tabor said once you get past this point, it’s time to start researching and enlisting as much free help as you can find.

The Johnstons found a valuable resource in the N.C. Department of Agriculture, while Tabor and Beddoe turned to Wilmington SCORE, a volunteer group of retired executives who counsel budding businesspeople.

Next comes product testing on friends, retailers and anyone else who is willing to sample what you’re offering, they said.

“Determine who your target market is and test your product to make sure the consumer will buy it, and the rest of it is just a matter of working your way through the process,” Steve Johnston said. “Know your customer.”

Unlike Glynne’s Soaps, Aunt Ellie’s and other food products have to go to the N.C. State Department of Food Science for lab testing and packaging requirements for a fee of $200, he said.

And then you have to determine where to set up your operation. Aunt Ellie’s opted to do the work at a Louisburg bottling company, while Tabor and Beddoe handle all production and packaging of Glynne’s Soaps from their Monkey Junction home.

From the standpoint of these businesses, it takes about seven to nine months from idea to finished product.

Then comes the ongoing job of pricing and selling your goods to retailers, online or both. Glynne’s Soaps does both, while Aunt Ellie’s sticks solely to wholesale.

“It was a real learning curve for us because neither one of us had ever done any retail,” Tabor said. “It was a lot of trial and error, to be perfectly honest.”

Are You Ready for Summer?

I don’t know about you, but I am ready for warmer weather and long sunny days.  We had our first festival of the season last weekend and spending the day outside was wonderful.  Even though it was still a bit chilly, it was a preview of the nice weather that is just around the corner.

Your mind might be ready for the summer, but is your skin?  There are things you can do that will help get those areas of your body that have been under wraps for a few months ready to shine.

  • Exfoliate – Nothing gets your skin silky smooth like removing all the dead skin cells.
  • Moisturize – Keep your skin soft with a good all natural lotion which will add moisture but none of the artificial chemicals.  Choose your favorite from Glynne’s Soaps variety of natural products.  And don’t forget your lips, they need moisturizing too.  Glynne’s Soaps has a line of all natural, petroleum free lip balms, including some with zinc oxide to protect your lips from the sun’s rays.
  • Firm up cellulite.  Using skin products containing caffeine has been shown to reduce cellulite and firm up areas that might be a bit saggy.  Before you get in to that swim suit, make sure you are showering with Glynne’s Soaps Java Scrub, an all natural soap made with coffee.  You should notice a difference before that first pool party.

Don’t let the summer sneak up on you.  Start getting ready now so you can fully enjoy the season and all it has to offer.  Glynne’s Soaps will be at the Pleasure Island Fresh Market starting Saturday, March 19th.  Come see us.
