5 Reasons to Pass on Anti-Bacterial Soap

The student government at the University of Texas recently placed a resolution calling for a ban on the use of anti-bacterial soaps on campus.  They realized something that many people don’t get.  Not only is anti-bacterial soap ineffective, it can be dangerous.  But don’t take my word for it (or the student government at Texas, for that matter).  Look at these facts:

1.  The FDA has discovered that anti-bacterial soaps provide no benefit over washing with regular soap and water.

2.  The FDA is also currently researching the effect that triclosan (the main ingredient in anti-bacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, deodorants and other products) has on our bodies.  Triclosan is an endocrine disruptor and can remain in body tissue for an extremely long time.  This can allow it to build up in your body after prolonged use and cause extensive damage.

3.  Anti-bacterial soaps also lead to the growth of resistant bacteria that become harder and harder to kill.

4.  Wastewater treatment plants can not remove triclosan from the water.  This dangerous chemical moves into rivers and streams where is kills algae and destroys ecosystems.

5.  Scientists at the University of Minnesota have found that when exposed to sunlight, triclosan degrades to form dioxins – one of the most toxic chemicals known to science.

If you are concerned about dangerous chemicals in the products you use, stay away from anti-bacterial products.  The all  natural alternatives are much better.

Is It Safe?

I read a news article recently about the lengths people will go to to purge their home of toxic and dangerous chemicals.  One portion that really stood out to me was the following -

…the wild proliferation of chemicals in the marketplace, said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor of pediatrics, environmental medicine and health policy at New York University. “One thousand to three thousand new chemicals were introduced into our environment every year over the past 30 years,” Dr. Trasande said.

Those numbers made me think.  At minimum, that is 30,000 new chemicals introduced into the environment, with little or no regard for the effect they will have on us, our children or the earth itself.

We have become increasingly aware over the past 4 years just how dangerous some common household items really are.  We don’t go overboard, but we have been able to rid our home of some of the dangerous things we were exposing ourselves to everyday, and have been able to replace them with natural alternatives.  And we try to spread the news as much as we can so that other people don’t find out the dangers the hard way – by losing a pet, like we did, or by damaging their heath.

The Household Products Database from the National Library of Medicine, provides chemical safety sheets for thousands of consumer products. You can check up on the safety of the things you use everyday.  Then keep up with our blog, especially “How To Tuesdays” where we share natural alternatives that you can use right away.

Do The Right Thing

Glynne's Soaps will never test on animals

Within the last month, it has been revealed that some of the major cosmetic and soap companies, in order to increase profits, have rolled over and complied with an arcane Chinese law that all products MUST undergo animal testing to be sold in China.  So, instead of losing some (hopefully short range) dollars and doing the right thing, they quietly did the required testing.  Note the word quietly – they didn’t say anything, didn’t even take the “Cruelty Free” badge off their website.  This after 20 years of not participating in the ridiculous and inhumane process.  All for a lousy few dollars.

Avon and Estee Lauder are the two biggest offenders of this.  Mary Kay is at least trying to help the Chinese government see that there is alternate testing that is just as effective but doesn’t harm any animals.  Unfortunately, convincing them is probably a long way off.  In the meantime, what can you do?  Protest for one thing.  Write letters to these companies.  Hitting them in their pocketbook can help too.  According to the article in Forbes Magazine

Buying beauty and personal care products from small, all-natural, health-conscious brands is a great way to “protest” too — while smelling better than ever.

Here is a recently updated list of personal care companies and brands that currently continue to test on animals.  This is a list that Glynne’s Soaps will never be on.  We are as committed today as we ever have been to remain cruelty free.  The only animals we test on are ourselves, and after that, Wrigley and Marshall.

Your Wrinkles or Your Life (Know What is in Your Skin Care Products)

Are there toxic chemicals in your skin care products?

A very disturbing news story came to our attention yesterday, and we would be remiss if we didn’t pass it along to you (you can read the news story here).  It seems that skin care products tainted with mercury have been discovered in seven different states.  They are believed to have been imported to the US from other countries and are are touted as products that can remove age spots, freckles, wrinkles and other blemishes, including acne.  Most of the tainted products have been found in small shops found in ethnic areas.

Mercury has historically been used in skin care products as a whitening agent, promising to remove age spots and blotchy skin.  The use of mercury for this purpose has been banned in the United States, however some imported products still contain this toxic chemical.  A form of mercury called thiomersal  or Merthiolate can still be found in some mascaras, eye shadows and sunscreens.  It is not as heavily regulated even though it contains mercury.

Mercury is highly toxic and can cause brain and kidney damage.  Signs of mercury poisoning include irritability, tremors, memory problems, vision or hearing impairment, depression and numbness and tingling around the mouth or in the hands and feet.  Here are the names of ingredients that are some form of mercury.  You do not want any of these chemicals on your skin.

  • mercurous chloride
  • calomel
  • mercuric
  • mercurio
  • mercury
  • Ethyl (2-mercaptobenzoato-S) mercury sodium salt
  • [(o-carboxyphenyl)thio] Ethyl mercury sodium salt
  • Mercurochrome
  • Mercurothiolate
  • Merthiolate
  • Sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate
  • Thimerosal
  • Thiomersalan

If any of your skin care products contain one of more of these ingredients, stop using them immediately!  Also, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of mercury poisoning, see your doctor.

Stories like this remind us why we started Glynne’s Soaps.  We want to make skin care products available to people that do not contain any harsh or dangerous chemicals.  Things that they can feel safe using on themselves, their kids and their pets.

Where We are Going

A new year always brings with it so much promise and excitement.  And here in the Glynne’s Soaps offices, things are no different.  We are looking forward to growing bigger and better in 2012.  To that end, here are some things you can look forward to seeing from us as the year progresses.

Products

There always seems to be an increasing list of products that we are interested in creating. Either things we have come up with, or things that customers have suggested to us.  Sometimes the list seems overwhelming.  But we have a few things that are on the “short list” for 2012 that we are very excited about.

  • Shaving soap – This has been on the list for too long, so look for it to become a reality this year.  The shaving soap, along with a brush and cup will be available in time for Father’s Day.
  • Soap made with hemp oil – The benefits of hemp oil are extensive due to it’s ratio of omega -3 to omega-6 fatty acids which matches the balance needed by the body.  Look for soaps containing this beneficial oil in the near future.
  • Cotton washcloths – We think  hand crocheted cotton washcloths will make a perfect addition to our line of products.  They will be rolling out soon as well.

Festivals

A major part of our business, farmer’s markets and festivals are also great fun and give us a chance to meet our customers face to face.  We plan on continuing to be involved with the Pleasure Island Farmer’s Market and the Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market, along with other festivals throughout the year.  You can always check our blog, or our Facebook page to keep up to date with where we will be.

Locations

We are consistently looking for new wholesale venues to sell our soap.  In 2012, the search will expand outside of our local area.

Staff

While there are currently no plans to add another staff member, you never know what the future might bring. But for now, Wrigley and Marshall are about all the staff we can handle.

We hope that you will continue to share the ride with us as we grow throughout 2012.  We couldn’t do it without you.

It’s Never Too Late to Say Thank You

We hope you were able to spend some time this past weekend thanking our veterans, past and present, who have fought to keep America free.  We are truly thankful for their service and sacrifice, and are blessed to live in this country.

Celebrating 11:11 on 11/11/11

This Veteran’s Day had a fun twist because the date was 11/11/11, something that doesn’t come around too often.  Our soap maker, Jenn was pleased because she is that “science and math nerd” sort of person.  We sat down with Wrigley the sales manager and tried to take some pictures at 11:11 on 11/11/11 to commemorate the  historic event.

Is it too late to offer a Veteran’s Day special?  We say “NO!  It’s never to late for a special.”  So, in honor of that, we are offering 11% off everything purchased on our website between now and Friday.  Just use the code “VETERAN” at checkout.

(On another note, if anyone knows where we can buy a Veteran’s Day t-shirt that says “11/11/11” on it for Gayle‘s mom, could you let us know.  She was hoping to find one.)

Thank you

Later this month Glynne’s Soaps turns three years old! As we sit here today writing this to you, we’re amazed at how far we have come! When we lost Franklyn and started to talk about and make soaps we joked that soap would become our full-time gig; neither of us truly believing that we could make it happen. Through the years we have heard from all the skeptics. We have been forced to face our own fears that ‘we couldn’t do it’. We are happy to report that we have survived!

But we have not survived alone!

We wish we could list the throngs of people who have supported our efforts! From the friends who have participated in late night and weekend wrapping parties to help get soaps ready, to those who have manned our booth at events. From those who have put our products in their stores to those who have worked to get our products in stores they frequent. From those who have provided shoulders for us to cry on, to those who knew just when we needed that encouraging call. From our customers who refuse to use anything but Glynne’s Soaps to those customers who recruit their friends to our products.

The past three years have been an incredible journey for us and we owe it all to you! So as Gayle’s Mom says “Thank you! Until you’re better paid!”

Irene, Newsletter & more

Yep, we had a hurricane and for everyone who called, emailed and sent text messages, the soaps are fine! :)

We were closely watching the storm last week and after much deliberation we decided on Friday morning to just ride out the storm here rather than head in-land to Gayle moms near Winston-Salem. It turned out to be a good decision. After a quick trip Friday morning to lay in supplies (i.e. non-perishables and snacks, as well as a few movies and books) we settled in to weather the storm.

As fate would have it, we never lost power! We saw lots of wind and rain but we kept satellite TV and electricity the entire time. Hope you and your family faired as well!

We did send out our newsletter, which we have officially named What’s Bubblin’ at Glynne’s Soaps, on Thursday of last week. In it we talk about the anniversary of the event that started Glynne’s Soaps. In case you missed it, you can read it here.  If you are a subscriber, make sure you white list us glynnesoaps @ gmail . com and watch for What’s bubblin’ at Glynne’s Soaps in your email on the 11th and 25th of each month. If you’re not a subscriber….sign up now by clicking here!

Today seems like any other Monday here are Glynne’s Soaps.
