Happy Earth Day – 6 Ways to Celebrate Today

Today is Earth Day, a day in which we all celebrate this great planet we live on, and commit to doing something that will protect and preserve it’s resources.  This year, the global focus of Earth Day is on our cities and how to make them more environmentally resilient and sustainable.

According to the Earth Day Network, over a billion people in 190 countries celebrate Earth Day every year.  Here are 6 ways you can celebrate Earth Day today.

  • Take a Global Selfie – This year, NASA is asking people to take a selfie somewhere outdoor and share it on social media using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie.  The aim is to encourage environmental awareness.  NASA is also planning to use the pictures to create a photo mosaic of Earth.
  • Eat Lunch Outside – Spend some time outside enjoying the area where you live or work.  Reconnecting with nature is one of the best ways to remember why we are working so hard to save it.
  • Download an App – OK, I can see you shaking your head, wondering what on earth this has to do with saving the planet, but there are a lot of good apps out there that can help you in the quest to “go green”.   Here are the top 10 green apps to help get you started.
  • Eat Local – Did you know that if everyone ate one meal a week from only locally sourced foods,  we can reduce our national oil consumption by more than 1.1 million barrels of oil — every single week. That’s more than 57.2 million barrels of oil saved per year!*  Download the Locavore App to help you find local in-season foods.
  • Buy Smart – When making purchases, choose those that have the smallest environmental impact.  Less packaging, recycled materials, natural ingredients; all are ways to reduce your environmental footprint.  Glynne’s Soaps prides itself on it’s use of all natural ingredients in it’s products.
  • Set a Good Example – The next generation will learn how to treat things by watching us.  It is so important to set a good example by showing respect for the planet and doing as much as we can to preserve our resources.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day today?  Leave a comment and let us know your plans!

Why We Preach All Natural and What does it Mean?

No matter where you look, you are bombarded with the phrase “all natural” or “natural”.  But what does this word mean?  What do you think of when you hear or see the word natural?  I’m betting that every person reading this blog has a different picture in their mind’s eye right now.

Unfortunately, there is very little government regulation on using the word.  So when you see it, you can’t be certain that it means what you think it means.  In fact, much of the time, it doesn’t mean anything at all except a way to make money.  Which brings up an important question -

How can you determine if a product is truly natural?

There are a few things you can look for that will help you choose wisely.

  • Read the ingredient list.  Most unfamiliar long scientific sounding words are probably describing heavily processed ingredients or chemicals.
  • Do your research.  The Environmental Working Group is a great place to start.  They have information on a multitude of products and ingredients.
  • Avoid products that contain dyes and fragrances.  Companies don’t have to define them and they are full of toxins.  The worst offenders are the words “parfum” or “parfume”.
  • Stay far away from parabens, formaldehyde, dimethicone, dioxins and pthalates.  These are the main toxic chemicals found in skin care and have been linked to all sorts of health issues.

You might be asking yourself, why is this important?  Why should I care?

Well, let me tell you….

From a scientific standpoint, you should care because there are ingredients out there that are toxic and harmful.  Even if it’s not immediately dangerous, a buildup of these chemicals can cause all sorts of health problems – things like kidney failure, cancer, asthma, migraines and a host of other problems.

Why We Preach All Natural

From a personal standpoint, don’t you want your family to be healthy?  I know I do.  And avoiding toxic chemicals is one way we can do that.  It’s a lesson we learned the hard way.  Which is why we preach the importance of using truly all natural ingredients whenever possible.  And why you will find nothing but the best most natural ingredients in all our products.

How Will You Celebrate Bathtub Party Day?

Today, December the 5th, is National Bathtub Party Day.  Now, before you try and decide what type of cake to make for the tub or go out looking for an oversized party hat, let me tell you that Bathtub Party Day is a day set aside to enjoy your bathtub.  Most days, we all just take a quick shower, wash everything and are done with it.  When was the last time you filled the tub and took a nice relaxing bath?  I know, I can’t remember either.

Wrigley int eh tub for Bathtub Party Day

Well, today is the day to change all that.  Today is the day to pull out the rubber ducky, light some scented candles, fill the tub and relax.  At the very least, today is the day to assemble your “bath kit” and get ready to enjoy your tub time.  I say it’s just in time for the craziness that comes with the holiday season!

And Glynne’s Soaps can help you relax!

We have the products that will make your bath time extra special.  Here are some things you need to have to enhance your bathtub experience.

Bath Salts – made with a precise blend of sea salt, epsom salts, baking soda and therapeutic grade essential oils, when added to hot water, these bath salts will create a luxurious environment without equal.  The salts will soften your skin and the scent will improve your mood.

Our bath salts come in 4 varieties

Tranquility – a relaxing blend of lavender and chamomile

Rejuvenation – the peppermint and eucalyptus oils will awaken and invigorate

Rain – the calming citrus scents of lemongrass and bergamot

Aussie Rainforest – the eucalyptus oil will clear your mind and open your sinuses

Frankincense & Myrrh – perfect for relaxing during the bustle of the holidays

Scrubs – with scents to match the bath salts, use these sensuous whipped body scrubs to exfoliate dry skin while you bathe

Soaps – pick out soap in your favorite scent to compliment your bathing experience.

And finally, to get you on your way, here are 6 steps to help you create the perfect tub experience.

Relax and Enjoy A Glynne's Soaps Bathtub Party

1.  Temperature – The right bath temperature can make all the difference.  The ideal water temperature for a bath is 92 degrees.  When filling the tub, use your wrist as a indicator, not your hand or (as I sometimes do) your toes.  It will give you the best indication of how the water will feel when you are in the tub.

 2.  Body Scrub – Gently massaging your body with an exfoliating scrub can help you relax and keep your mind from worrying about all the things you “should be doing”.  As an added benefit, your skin will be soft and smooth.

 3.  Close your eyes – The best way to achieve true relaxation is by closing your eyes and not focusing on how badly the bathroom floor needs to be cleaned.

4.  Bath Salts – Bath salts are like external muscle relaxants.  They can help reduce inflammation and soreness.  They also will detoxify your skin and increase circulation.

5. Candles – by lighting candles and not using the harsh bathroom lights, you are telling your body and mind to relax instead of the usual morning bathroom get up and go.

6.   Music – Listening to music can aid in the relaxation process.  Just don’t drop your iPod into the tub.

Now go and have a happy Bathtub Party Day.  If you are in need of some “party favors”, head to our website.  We have what you need for yourself or to give someone the gift of a perfect bath experience.  Go directly to www.glynnesoaps.com buy your bathtub party supplies today using coupon code ‘BathParty’ and get FREE shipping on your entire order!

Our goal is to make the best devices in the world, not to be the biggest.

- Steve Jobs

Our goal is to make the best all natural products in the world, not to be the biggest.

- Gayle & Jenn

We are unbelievably excited (and to be honest a little scared) to announce that Glynne’s Soaps is moving out of the kitchen!

It has been our goal since Glynne’s Soaps inception that one day operations would move out of our kitchen and into its own space. Three years ago we partially reached that goal, we rented warehouse space and move our storage offsite. However, all our manufacturing remained here in our kitchen.

Today we are proud to announce that we have taken the leap…

24 N Front St

…and we have rented studio space above Crescent Moon at 24 N Front Street! Soon our entire operation will be moving.  We will also have kiosk space in Crescent Moon where you will be able to purchase all of your favorite Glynne’s Soaps. Crescent Moon is a Gift Gallery featuring hand crafted American art.  Glynne’s Soaps is excited to be a part of this wonderful collection.

The entire staff of Glynne’s Soaps is thrilled about our move (okay maybe not Marshall whose tail is far to waggley to be in a gallery of many glass items), and we are looking forward to this new adventure.  We plan to be moved in by October 15th.  Make sure to stop by Crescent Moon at 24 N Front St in downtown Wilmington to say Hi.

Is Your Shower Killing You?

A recent study by the Center for Environmental Health discovered a cancer causing chemical in at least 98 soaps and shampoos, some of which are labeled organic.

The Culprit

Is this worth your health?

Cocomide DEA is a chemically modified form of coconut oil that is used as a foaming agent.  Cocmide DEA is a Group  2B carcinogen, which means it is possibly carcinogenic to humans.  It also has a high irritation potential.  All this means is that the cocomide DEA in your soaps and shampoos has the potential to cause cancer and also severely irritate your skin.

To see the list of products found to contain cocomide DEA, follow this link.  You can also look at the list of ingredients on your soaps and shampoos for “cocomide DEA”.

What is the Alternative?

The best alternative for you and your family is to choose soaps and shampoos that truly are all natural!

Completely Natural Soap (even the scent)

Here at Glynne’s Soaps we refuse to make a soap we wouldn’t use on us our our beloved pets!  We use only the finest all natural ingredients that are safe for you and your family.

Be Ready For Anything

Paths of Hurricanes since 1851

It is that time of year, here in the southeast, that we watch the weather reports for the possibility of a hurricane heading our way.  Although, disaster can strike anywhere at any time.  Currently, my mom is closely watching the wildfires in Northern California hoping she does not have to evacuate her home, or worse.

In 2010, FEMA declared 81 disasters in the United States.  And even worse, 42% of Americans have no plan for what they would do in case disaster strikes.

Having a good plan can make a huge difference if you find yourself in the midst of a disaster.  Here are some things you can do to keep your family safe.

Develop a plan

  1. How will you evacuate your home?  Come up with at least 2 evacuation routes and practice them.  Make sure you have an outdoor meeting place in case family members get separated.
  2. Make a list of emergency contact numbers.
  3. Determine an out of state friend or relative that family members can call in case you are separated during an evacuation.

Build an emergency preparedness kit with 3 days of basic necessities

  1. Drinkable water ( a gallon per person per day – don’t forget your pets when you count)
  2. Non-perishable food and a can opener (again, don’t forget your pets).  When you are choosing food, pick items that you like or at least have already eaten.  You don’t want to be stuck with things that upset your system or that you might be allergic to.
  3. A flashlight with extra batteries
  4. A simple first aid kit with a supply of prescription medicines.
  5. Basic toiletries and sanitation items (toilet paper, hand sanitizer, plastic garbage bags)
  6. Cell phone charger
  7. Dust mask and plastic gloves
  8. Small tool kit (with tools needed to turn off electricity or water)
  9. Cash in small denominations
  10. A change of clothes, including a jacket.

Keep your kit someplace where you can get to it easily.  At least once a year, go through the kit and update things that need updating.  Make sure your family knows where the kit is, and has the up to date emergency numbers.

Do you and your family have an emergency plan?  Does it include something that we haven’t listed?  Leave a comment and let us know.

5 Reasons to Pass on Anti-Bacterial Soap

The student government at the University of Texas recently placed a resolution calling for a ban on the use of anti-bacterial soaps on campus.  They realized something that many people don’t get.  Not only is anti-bacterial soap ineffective, it can be dangerous.  But don’t take my word for it (or the student government at Texas, for that matter).  Look at these facts:

1.  The FDA has discovered that anti-bacterial soaps provide no benefit over washing with regular soap and water.

2.  The FDA is also currently researching the effect that triclosan (the main ingredient in anti-bacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, deodorants and other products) has on our bodies.  Triclosan is an endocrine disruptor and can remain in body tissue for an extremely long time.  This can allow it to build up in your body after prolonged use and cause extensive damage.

3.  Anti-bacterial soaps also lead to the growth of resistant bacteria that become harder and harder to kill.

4.  Wastewater treatment plants can not remove triclosan from the water.  This dangerous chemical moves into rivers and streams where is kills algae and destroys ecosystems.

5.  Scientists at the University of Minnesota have found that when exposed to sunlight, triclosan degrades to form dioxins – one of the most toxic chemicals known to science.

If you are concerned about dangerous chemicals in the products you use, stay away from anti-bacterial products.  The all  natural alternatives are much better.

Is It Safe?

I read a news article recently about the lengths people will go to to purge their home of toxic and dangerous chemicals.  One portion that really stood out to me was the following -

…the wild proliferation of chemicals in the marketplace, said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor of pediatrics, environmental medicine and health policy at New York University. “One thousand to three thousand new chemicals were introduced into our environment every year over the past 30 years,” Dr. Trasande said.

Those numbers made me think.  At minimum, that is 30,000 new chemicals introduced into the environment, with little or no regard for the effect they will have on us, our children or the earth itself.

We have become increasingly aware over the past 4 years just how dangerous some common household items really are.  We don’t go overboard, but we have been able to rid our home of some of the dangerous things we were exposing ourselves to everyday, and have been able to replace them with natural alternatives.  And we try to spread the news as much as we can so that other people don’t find out the dangers the hard way – by losing a pet, like we did, or by damaging their heath.

The Household Products Database from the National Library of Medicine, provides chemical safety sheets for thousands of consumer products. You can check up on the safety of the things you use everyday.  Then keep up with our blog, especially “How To Tuesdays” where we share natural alternatives that you can use right away.

Do The Right Thing

Glynne's Soaps will never test on animals

Within the last month, it has been revealed that some of the major cosmetic and soap companies, in order to increase profits, have rolled over and complied with an arcane Chinese law that all products MUST undergo animal testing to be sold in China.  So, instead of losing some (hopefully short range) dollars and doing the right thing, they quietly did the required testing.  Note the word quietly – they didn’t say anything, didn’t even take the “Cruelty Free” badge off their website.  This after 20 years of not participating in the ridiculous and inhumane process.  All for a lousy few dollars.

Avon and Estee Lauder are the two biggest offenders of this.  Mary Kay is at least trying to help the Chinese government see that there is alternate testing that is just as effective but doesn’t harm any animals.  Unfortunately, convincing them is probably a long way off.  In the meantime, what can you do?  Protest for one thing.  Write letters to these companies.  Hitting them in their pocketbook can help too.  According to the article in Forbes Magazine

Buying beauty and personal care products from small, all-natural, health-conscious brands is a great way to “protest” too — while smelling better than ever.

Here is a recently updated list of personal care companies and brands that currently continue to test on animals.  This is a list that Glynne’s Soaps will never be on.  We are as committed today as we ever have been to remain cruelty free.  The only animals we test on are ourselves, and after that, Wrigley and Marshall.

Your Wrinkles or Your Life (Know What is in Your Skin Care Products)

Are there toxic chemicals in your skin care products?

A very disturbing news story came to our attention yesterday, and we would be remiss if we didn’t pass it along to you (you can read the news story here).  It seems that skin care products tainted with mercury have been discovered in seven different states.  They are believed to have been imported to the US from other countries and are are touted as products that can remove age spots, freckles, wrinkles and other blemishes, including acne.  Most of the tainted products have been found in small shops found in ethnic areas.

Mercury has historically been used in skin care products as a whitening agent, promising to remove age spots and blotchy skin.  The use of mercury for this purpose has been banned in the United States, however some imported products still contain this toxic chemical.  A form of mercury called thiomersal  or Merthiolate can still be found in some mascaras, eye shadows and sunscreens.  It is not as heavily regulated even though it contains mercury.

Mercury is highly toxic and can cause brain and kidney damage.  Signs of mercury poisoning include irritability, tremors, memory problems, vision or hearing impairment, depression and numbness and tingling around the mouth or in the hands and feet.  Here are the names of ingredients that are some form of mercury.  You do not want any of these chemicals on your skin.

  • mercurous chloride
  • calomel
  • mercuric
  • mercurio
  • mercury
  • Ethyl (2-mercaptobenzoato-S) mercury sodium salt
  • [(o-carboxyphenyl)thio] Ethyl mercury sodium salt
  • Mercurochrome
  • Mercurothiolate
  • Merthiolate
  • Sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate
  • Thimerosal
  • Thiomersalan

If any of your skin care products contain one of more of these ingredients, stop using them immediately!  Also, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of mercury poisoning, see your doctor.

Stories like this remind us why we started Glynne’s Soaps.  We want to make skin care products available to people that do not contain any harsh or dangerous chemicals.  Things that they can feel safe using on themselves, their kids and their pets.
